Go Beyond Clinical Experience. Think Like a Global Healthcare Leader.

Traveling to Japan through COPE Health Solutions gave me valuable insight into a healthcare system built on universal coverage and a deep commitment to overall health and wellness. I was struck by how preventative care, accessibility, and respect for patients were deeply integrated into everyday practices, reflecting a society that truly prioritizes the well-being of its people. My experiences through COPE Health Solutions have broadened my perspective on what’s possible in healthcare and will continue to shape the way I approach medicine.

My favorite part of the program was the opportunity to interact directly with Japanese clinic and hospital staff, as well as other healthcare professionals. They were incredibly knowledgeable, approachable, and generous with their time, and being able to ask questions and hear their firsthand perspectives made the experience feel complete and meaningful. Those interactions helped me better understand how healthcare systems function in ways that go beyond what lectures alone can provide. Prior to this program, I had very little understanding of value-based healthcare and its impact on patient outcomes. Through conversations with experienced professionals, I developed a strong appreciation for this approach. Learning about the Japanese healthcare system reshaped how I view efficiency, access, and quality of care, and many of these ideas are ones I hope to carry forward in my future career as a healthcare professional.

The Japan International Intensive transformed the way I think about healthcare. Through immersive hospital site visits, faculty-led discussions, and direct exposure to healthcare systems in Japan, I gained a deeper understanding of how policy, culture, operations, and patient-centered design shape healthcare far beyond the clinical setting alone. One of the most impactful experiences was visiting the Rehabilitation Hospital, where every aspect of care felt intentionally designed to support not only physical recovery, but also dignity, independence, and quality of life. This experience challenged me to think critically about healthcare systems at both the clinical and systems level and continues to influence my path toward medicine and clinical research. Beyond the academic experience, building friendships within the cohort, exploring Japan’s culture and history, and engaging with healthcare professionals and esteemed faculty made this an unforgettable and incredibly meaningful experience.

The Japan International Intensive provided an immersive opportunity to explore Japan’s healthcare delivery systems, policies, successes, and challenges through direct exposure to healthcare professionals, faculty, and healthcare environments across Tokyo. As a physical therapist, the program gave me a new lens to analyze local, national, and global healthcare systems and inspired me to further explore healthcare policy, delivery systems, community health, and population health. Beyond the academic experience, immersing myself in Japanese culture and building meaningful professional connections were some of the most memorable aspects of the program. The experience motivated me to return as an International Health Scholar Leader Ambassador to continue expanding on what I learned during the first cohort and help support future participants throughout their own journey.

Dr. Sammy Eghbalieh, FACS, DFSVS, RPVI is a board-certified expert in the most advanced techniques of vascular, endovascular, and minimally invasive surgery for venous and arterial diseases. He is the fastest growing vascular surgeon in the San Fernando Valley and has done over 10,000 procedures. He is the director of vascular and endovascular surgery as well as, director of vascular imaging at Southern California Multi-Specialty Center (SCMSC).

Arthur Gianelli MA, MBA, MPH, FACHE, is the President and Chief Transformation Officer for One Brooklyn Health. Mr. Gianelli has more 25 years of experience in senior leadership roles in complex health systems, including nearly eight years as a health system’s Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Gianelli earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from St. John’s University, a Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from Brown University, a Master in Business Administration Degree from Dowling College, and a Master in Public Health Degree from Columbia University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Gianelli teaches “Issues in Hospital Management”, “Strategy”, and “Managed Care and Healthcare Reform” to graduate students at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Allen Miller is the CEO and a Principal of COPE Health Solutions. For more than 30 years, Mr. Miller has led the planning, implementation and optimization of clinically integrated networks (CIN), independent physician associations (IPA), accountable care organizations (ACO) and health plans nationally. His areas of expertise include advanced value based payment arrangements including global risk and capitation; population health management; large scale strategic partnerships; and innovative payer-provider strategies. He is a nationally-known expert on value-based payment transformation and is a frequent author and speaker.

Under Mr. Miller’s leadership, COPE Health Solutions has brought to bear market-leading products and solutions companies for payers, medical groups, health systems and other providers transitioning to VBP and population health management (PHM) for all lines of business. COPE Health Solutions complements its VBP and PHM focused consulting and analytics services with innovative health workforce solutions and advisory services, including the largest health care talent pipeline in the country. A graduate of UCLA, both for his Bachelors of Science and his Masters of Public Health in Health Services, Mr. Miller also completed an intensive on International Business at Oxford University in England. Mr. Miller has lectured at numerous universities nationally and internationally and currently serves as an adjunct faculty member for the MPH/MHA programs at Columbia University with a focus on value based payment.

After completing a Master’s degree in Mathematics at the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo, Reiji Murayama joined the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 1980. He was engaged in statistical research, actuarial analysis, and policy reforms in public health insurance, pensions, and long-term care insurance systems until his retirement in 2013.Currently, he serves as an advisor actuary to the National Federation of Health Insurance Societies (KEMPOREN) and as a part-time lecturer at Josai International University.

Carlene Zincke is a Principal & Executive Vice President with COPE Health Solutions. She is a RN with more than 35 years of clinical and managerial experience. She has more than 15 years in acute care specializing in Intensive Care Services, Leading Teams in Pediatric, Medical and surgical ICU in New York City area public and private sectors, as well as public health. She has worked in Managed Care developing and building care management programs within major insurance and health plans in the northeast and central regions of the United States. Ms. Zincke is passionate about caring for those in need and has participated in several local and international activities including Puerto Rico after Maria. Medical missions in West Africa and currently in a local food bank in NYC feeding 1500 families weekly since March 2020.
